Hoods up in Solidarity! Finally met a somewhat local oppo that has been elusive thus far. We just happened to show up to the same autocross without coordination . Small world!
Anyways, I’ll talk about Sunday in a bit but we can start the day before on the first adventure.
Due to the forecasted hest, I took out the Subaru so that I could have some AC and a real roof to keep some heat out. While the Miata has currently functional AC, it’s somewhat pathetic in its ability to keep the cabin cool in real heat. It makes it “not hot” but I prefer so cold that my hands hurt if I don’t redirect the vents eventually. On this adventure I set out to do a decently serious hike that conveniently included a nice drive of CA-33 while “in the neighborhood”.
The “trail” was a bit untraveled which was probably the most difficult part. Not everything was this bad but there were a few bushwacking sections where I was very glad to have my All trails app pointing me where the trail was. I only saw one person on the entire 10 mile hike so I had it all to myself. I got there nice and early so the weather was still pretty good. And with the altitude change from 4000 to 7000 feet on this hike, the temperature stayed about 70-75 all the way to the top. Very pleasant summer morning at that point, especially since that’s with low teen percentage humidity.
Views started out pretty nice and the area was so quiet with just the buzzing bees/flies, crickets, and the occasional distant motorcycle going by. It only got better with the ascent though!

I would have been able to see out to the ocean and potentially even the channel islands if it was clear enough. Especially if I hiked a bit further at the top and explored the ridge a bit. But it was cloudy down at the shore and I really needed to get home to get ready for the autox the next day, so after lunch I headed down into the heat. It definitely increased in temperature in the way down as I quickly descended. It was probably 45 minutes faster down, especially since I just wanted to get out of the heat and get on the road. It had started at 57 degrees when driving up the 33 and at the end of my hike, the car read 99 and weather was reporting about 96. Thankfully the tints and windshield shade kept the interior not lava and the AC quickly had it nice and cool on the way home.
Will definitely try to organize a future oppo meet to that road though, it was a blast in the morning with nobody around. And surprisingly people used the turnouts to get out of my way on the way down. But it was just much more crowded for sure.
Eventually I made it back down to Ventura and noticed a quick drop from 95 degrees to 70 in about a mile as I came across the Marine layer. It was wayyyyy more humid but still crazy how quick that temperature dropped . I had an enjoyable drive back with light traffic and then loaded up my Miata for the autocross.
Autocross was great the next day! It was setup so that you would get 4 runs for score along with the option to get 4 more for a higher price. These wouldn’t be counted, but they counted to me since I could care less about how other people did anyways. Doing the “X-runs” as they were called meant I was hot lapping though since they cram you into the two driver line. That was kind of neat since my track tires actually got warm enough. The 90 degree weather might have also had a play in that though! Eventually on my seventh run my car was running too hot though. I saw Temps of 215 after hot lapping and was experiencing timing cut at that point. So I lost time on my last lap because I just had less go.
Decided to finally end my cooling woes once and for all as soon as I got home. While yes, a coolant reroute would probably also help, that requires a headgasket replacement which I don’t want to do unless it’s necessary. I had originally planned on doing the FM crossflow rad but it was backordered until September and I’d rather not wait any longer. Plus I love what Emilio and his guys over there at 949/supermiata do anyways. Hopefully this doesn’t require too much hacking to install. Also made another order with 5x racing for a fuel pump. While I didn’t have a problem with that today, I’m just trying to fix every known issue rather than ignoring them.
Overall a great day and wonderful weekend in total!

Paying extra for extra runs in the dual driver lane is a really interesting idea. How many people take that option relative to the total number of drivers?

That scenery is something else. I need to find a way to spend some time out that way.

Yeah I love going out 33. I have some fun roads out there we could all take. Would be a great Oppo meet.

I was kind of surprised how few actually did. It was something like 30 drivers out of the 12 0 or so at the event. I thought that 8 runs sounded like the minimum for me to even bother showing up. 4 would have probably been a waste of my time. But that is mainly due to being used to track days where I get in a ton of seat time.
So per run group there were like 6-7 “ x run” driving cars on average. Meaning that between those and the few regular 2-driver cars, it was less than a dozen cars in those lanes. And we were basically hotlapping at that point. I had just enough time to take off my harness, adjust tire pressure, drink some water, and then rush into restrapping in and then get sent to the starter. Never had the chance to turn off the car, although that worked out since running the fan was definitely necessary anyways.

Hah, yup its certainly a paradise out here. And the wilderness areas are truly wilderness which is nice, given how close to LA everything is.
